1:00 am: 2nd Div (US) begins preparing to march

Warrenton Turnpike, East of Centreville

Burnside woke his men. They packed up what gear they had, checked their weapons and gradually formed up into companies. Many of the men had not slept, since the order had come to cook rations and be in column (ready to march) by 2:00 am. Fiske remembered that in the 2nd New Hampshire that when the order came through on the night of July 20 “the pots were set to boiling, and about midnight the boiled beef was cut up, [and] the coffee poured into the canteens…”

A similar scene was being played out throughout the Army of Northeastern Virginia.
